Robert Montgomery‘SHARING PERAMA’, 2019

In 2019, Outset Greece supported SHARING PERAMA, an artistic, cultural, ecological and social project running since 2017, that aims to promote contemporary art in and for Perama.

The project aims to create links between the people of Perama and contemporary art practice. Sharing Perama by poet and visual artist Robert Montgomery provides opportunities to experience contemporary art in public spaces as fertile ground for reflection, dialogue and debate.

Perama is a remote suburb of Piraeus in Athens that has been culturally neglected for decades. For years, the residents of Perama were active in the shipyards, engaged in a wide range of tasks requiring creativity and technical skills similar to those used by contemporary artists. Montgomery worked with local craftsmen and metal workers to showcase local talent and provide opportunities for the different communities.

Robert Montgomery is a British artist, who works primarily in public spaces. He is a poet, sculpting his poems with light (solar energy activated LEDs), visible to everyone – even at a distance – by both day and night. Wherever he installs his works, he ensures they resonate with the local context. Montgomery’s work in Perama responds to the history of the area.
