Outset Netherlands was proud to have supported New Paintings by Vincent Delbrouck at Foam Photography Museum as a result of awarding him with the Outset | Unseen Exhibition Fund 2015.
Founded in 2013, the Outset | Unseen Exhibition Fund was a unique partnership between Unseen Photo Fair, Foam and Outset Netherlands, providing a new institutional platform for emerging talent. Scouting the fair before opening hours, each year the curatorial committee selects one artist exhibiting at Unseen for a solo exhibition the following year at Foam Photography Museum, Amsterdam. This year the committee consisted of Eva Eicker (DE, 1981), Sena Çakirkaya (TR, 1984) and Joachim Naudts (BE, 1982)
New Paintings conveys the experience of contemplating beauty in nature. Delbrouck’s work reflects his holistic vision on life. The pictures do not tell fixed stories, nor do they imply set meanings. Yet simultaneously the images seem somehow familiar, since they are composed of everyday elements.
Delbrouck explores the medium of photography through imagination and mystery, connecting fragments of his personal life with print and collage. For him it is a way of painting: bringing together form and colour, he creates new, associative compositions. An important element is Delbrouck’s love for travel: he has re-visited many places, Cuba and Nepal in particular, where he entirely immerses himself in the landscape. The pieces of these experiences were brought together intuitively in his books and exhibitions.
This year’s committee on their choice: ‘The work of Vincent Delbrouck struck us as an interesting opposition to the clean aesthetics that are so predominant in the digital realm. While combining the physicality of the analogue imprint with an intuitive and instinctive way of working, Delbrouck creates installations as a flux of life.‘
