Katja Novitskova‘Microbial Oasis’, 2021

Outset Netherlands proudly supported the production of Microbial Oasis, a new solo exhibition of Katja Novitskova in Kunstfort bij Vijfhuizen.

Katja’s work is deeply rooted in the relationship between humankind, nature and technology. A relationship often described as complex – marked by constant conflict. Using a wide range of media, Katja proposes a radical future in which these elements are inextricably linked.

In the exhibition Katja’s critical view of past, present, and future takes as its starting point a publicly available “protein data bank” that consists of more than 10,000 images of proteins and viruses found in the human body. Her work is deeply rooted in the relationship between humankind, nature and technology. She complicates the relationship between organism, design, and capital into an installation with hanging objects and new video work in the Kunstfort’s weapons arsenal. Microbial Oasis is Katja’s first solo exhibition in the Netherlands.

Director and curator of Kunstfort Vijfhuizen – Zippora Elders has been creating an intriguing contemporary art program at the UNESCO world heritage Kunstfort bij Vijfhuizen which has formed the outset and an acceleration of several artists. Zippora’s vision has transformed the Kunstfort in a site-specific platform for experimentation for artists in the process of emerging-becoming-mid-career where they are able to deepen their practice.

Outset strongly believes in both the artist and curator and recognized this as a promising opportunity in the development of both their practices.
