The Outset Partners Awards Programme 2022 awarded an Impact Award to the exhibition Ministry of Loneliness by Italian artist Rebecca Moccia, curated by Chiara Nuzzi. The project has been developed in the last two years within different international cultural contexts such as the United Kingdom, the United States, Japan, and Italy. Moccia’s extensive work Ministry of Loneliness is a research-based project that investigates loneliness and its politicisation in neoliberal society, starting from the experience of isolation and the dissolution of everyday life that occurred with the COVID-19 pandemic. The project’s practical and symbolic starting point of the project is the Ministry of Loneliness, established in the United Kingdom in 2018 and later replicated in other countries such as Canada and Japan in 2021.
The exhibition was presented in summer 2023 at ICA Milano. The eponymous video installation at the core of the exhibition was produced in collaboration with Careof (in the framework of the Artevisione award 10th Edition), a series of thermal-camera images taken by the artist during the research, a new production of ceramics works, and a publication. The research was made possible thanks to the support of the Italian Council (2021), Directorate-General form Contemporary Creativity, Italian Ministry of Culture.
