Radio Athènes and Andreas Melas announced the joint representation of the Estate of Bia Davou in close collaboration with Zafos Xagoraris, aiming to archive, preserve, research and promote the oeuvre of one of the most compelling artists of the 20th century.
Bia Davou’s (1932-1996) experimentation with scientific models and their translation to art began in the early seventies, reflecting her interest in the poetics of systems of communication. Her research in the language of mathematics and information technologies anticipates today’s epistemological dominance of computing, evident in cultural production, governance and modes of thinking.
Several of her works on paper produced between 1975-1978 depict circuit boards, though without any intention to create an applicable model. The form of her precise free-hand design is imbued with expressive qualities, echoing musical notations.
Bia Davou was included in Documenta 14 (Athens, Kassel); in 2009, EMST (National Museum of Contemporary Art, Athens) presented the first major survey of her work, curated by Tina Pandi and Stamatis Schizakis. Currently, her works are included in the group exhibition Fate of a Cell (Martinos, Pandrossou, Athens) through November 7; Bia Davou: Works on Paper from the 1970s at Radio Athènes 8—31 October and in Art Athina Virtual 2020 throughout October.
